Spreadsheet Drop-downs

You can use spreadsheets to create drop-downs on your CalcTree pages. That is possible by defining a CalcTree parameter on a spreadsheet cell with a list data validation.

List data validations are a well-known feature of spreadsheets. They are a common way of controlling possible options for a spreadsheet cell value. The image below shows the corresponding dialogue for adding a list data validation on Microsoft Excel:
Creating drop-downs in Microsoft Excel

If you define a CalcTree parameter on a spreadsheet cell with list data validation, the parameter will become a drop-down when inserted on a CalcTree page. The entries in that drop-down will be the same as the list of valid entries in the original spreadsheet cell. The entries update dynamically when the calculation runs in CalcTree.

How to insert a drop-down on a CalcTree page

CalcTree supports drop-downs using spreadsheet sources. Therefore, you must upload a spreadsheet source to the CalcTree page to create a drop-down. You can set up a drop-down in four steps:

Step one: upload an empty spreadsheet

Create an empty spreadsheet on your device. Then upload the empty spreadsheet to CalcTree as follows:
Click on Spreadsheet on the Integrations sidebar:
Select Spreadsheet from the Integrations sidebar

If your page already has at least one integration, then you need to click on + Add to see the above items:

Click on + Add icon to see the add Spreadhseet option

A file selection dialogue will appear. Select the empty spreadsheet you had prepared on your device. The empty spreadsheet appears in the spreadsheet viewer.

Step two: add your drop-down data to the spreadsheet

Click the pencil icon next to the spreadsheet tab header on the source viewer.

Click on the pencil icon to open Microsoft's spreadsheet editor

A Microsoft Online spreadsheet editor will appear in a separate tab. Use this editor to list your drop-down entries in a range of cells in the spreadsheet, e.g.:

Add a list of your drop-down entries in a range of cells

Step three: define a validation list in the spreadsheet

In the same spreadsheet editor, add a list validation to a cell. To do that, click the Data validation icon on the Data ribbon:

define the list validation in the corresponding dialogue:
Adding a list data validation in Microsoft Excel online

You can learn more about list data validations in spreadsheets here on Microsoft's website.

Step four: define the drop-down spreadsheet parameter and insert it on the page

Close the Microsoft online spreadsheet editor. Your changes will be saved automatically.
On the spreadsheet viewer, select the cell to which you've just added data validation. Click on the green circle that appears on it to define a CalcTree parameter and insert it on the page as a drop-down. You will get a drop-down like this 🙌 :

😎 Note that if you already have a spreadsheet with the drop-down in it, you can skip steps one, two, and three. Just upload the spreadsheet and define a CalcTree parameter on the cells with list data validations to get the drop-down.
