MC
is the moisture content of the wood under considered, as a percentage (%)
Gb
is the basic specific gravity, which means the specific gravity at green state (unitless)
S0=26.5Gb
is the oven-dry moisture content as a percentage of it's green state moisture content (%)
SMC=S0(1−30MC)
is the desired moisture content as a percentage (%)
ρMC=ρwaterGb(100−SMC100+MC)
is the density of wood at a given moisture content, in pounds per cubic foot
(lb/ft3)
ρwater
is the density of water, taken as
62.4lb/ft3
Explanation
Density is the material's mass-to-volume ratio. It fluctuates in materials like wood that absorb water as it's moisture content varies. The wood's total mass increases upon moisture absorption, which may also alter its volume. Contrary to specific gravity, density accounts for both mass and volume at the prevailing moisture content, inclusive of water-mass.
To compute wood density at any moisture content, employ its basic specific gravity Gb and its percent volumetric shrinkage from the green state to the desired moisture content SMC.
