Rotational Kinetic Energy Calculator

Rotational kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses due to its rotation around an axis. It is a scalar quantity and can be calculated by considering the object's moment of inertia and angular velocity.

Calculation

Inputs

I
:4.5kg m^2

ω
:30rad / s

Here are the variables for the equation

  1. I = the moment of inertia (kg m^2).
  2. ω = angular velocity (rad/s).
  3. RE = the rotational kinetic energy (joules, J).

Output

RE
:2025J

RE=12Iw2RE = \frac {1}{2} I w^2

Explanation

Figure 1: Diagram For Rotational Kinetic Energy

The moment of inertia measures an object's resistance to rotational motion and is calculated based on the distribution of mass around the axis of rotation. The greater the moment of inertia, the greater the rotational kinetic energy of an object rotating at a given angular velocity. This is depicted in Figure 1.
The rotational kinetic energy can be described in the following equation:

RE=12Iw2RE = \frac {1}{2} I w^2
