This calculator computes the self-weight of a mass timber panel, useful for when the value is not provided by the CLT or glulam manufacturer. Units are in the imperial system.
Calculation
Equations
The equation for (rho) is given by:
ρ=1+G(0.9)MCG(1+MC) - is the specific gravity of a wood species (unitless)
- is the in-service moisture content of the CLT panel, commonly taken as for mass timber members (unitless). Note, remember to input the MC as a decimal in the above equation, e.g.
- is the specific gravity of the CLT panel, modified to account for the presence of water (unitless)
The equation for self-weight of the CLT panel is:
SW=SGw×rho×t - is the density of water, taken as
- is the thickness of the CLT panel, in feet . Note, the calculator converts the thickness from inches to feet automatically in Python.
